\"Artist Statement\"
I have always drawn and painted since earliest childhood as a means of self expression and enjoyment. I studied art formally in college to receive a BFA in painting, during which time I was very drawn to Eastern and Asian arts. At the same time, I was drawn to the spirituality of these traditions, art seeming to be a perfect way to express, or at least allude to, the inexpressible. My earlier works made use of more direct religious and spiritual symbolism, while in more recent years, with influence from my favorite traditions such as Persian, Mughal, and Indian Miniature, Russian lacquer work, and Japanese Zen painting, I have begun to paint what could be called a spiritualized reality.
Sometime referred to as “dreamscapes”, my present style reflects a vibrant and unchanging spirit behind the forms of nature. In a sense, though their colors and elements create a dreamlike ambiance, they reflect what could be called a higher reality that is more lasting and eternal than the world we live in. Stemming from a consciousness of the passing nature of the world and the permanence of the spirit, I am interested in portraying this archetypal world that is the source of all earthly forms.
Some present works, instead of portraying a whole landscape, may take a single element to highlight, such as an animal or flower, which could easily be imagined as being an inhabitant of such a landscape described above. Although I enjoy exploring diverse mediums, acrylic paint allows my style to evolve naturally in layers of many colors, finishing with precise detail. I would say that this present style is one that found me, rather than being one that I created. It is an inexhaustible realm which I hope to continue to paint abundantly from.
